Don’t you just love a summer destination wedding? A whole three or four days away with loved ones, with a chance for everyone to escape from the hustle and bustle, let their hair down, and enjoy some fresh mountain air. What could be better? If you’re planning a destination wedding in Colorado, you’ll want to plan or suggest at least a couple of activities for your guests, so they can get to know the local area a little better. And while winter sports might be what we’re best known for, summer is when the Rockies come alive with sunshine, wildflowers, and breathtaking scenery. As we say around here, you’ll come for the winter and stay for the summer!

A typical destination wedding weekend timeline might include a welcome party, some pre-wedding bonding time for bridesmaids or groomsmen and a Sunday farewell get-together. All of these are opportunities to enjoy an activity together. But in between, your guests may also be able to squeeze in sightseeing or sports activities. So here are some of Colorado’s best summer activities to consider adding to your schedule.

Hiking. Everywhere you look in this part of the world, you’re surrounded by incredible views and many guests will appreciate the chance to really enjoy them up close. There are multiple trails, from paved paths perfect for beginners to more challenging hikes up some of our highest peaks.

Mountain biking. Another great way to enjoy the trails is on a mountain bike. In fact, many local companies specialize in bike rentals and group bike tours, so you’ll easily be able to find a cycle adventure that suits you. But maybe save this until after the big day, especially if you’re a beginner. No cuts or bruises in those beautiful wedding photos!

Horseback rides. This is Old West country, so embrace your inner cowboy and saddle up for a horseback ride! Many local stables offer trail rides for all ages and abilities. As another option, you could arrange for a group to spend time at a real Colorado ranch to get the full experience.

Golf. They say that a ball flies farther and straighter at a higher elevation, so this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a quality game of golf! As an example of what’s available, here in Breckenridge, we have a Jack Nicklaus-designed, 27-hole course that ranks as one of the best in the country.

Boating. There are many ways to get your group out onto the water here. For example, kayaking, white water rafting or sailboat rentals and tours. Another option is waterside bars and restaurants, which are perfect for a pre- or post-wedding get-together.

Fly fishing. Another great way to enjoy the water is with a truly relaxing afternoon, casting your fly in one of our rivers while soaking in the mountain views.

Dog sledding. Surprisingly, dog sledding is not just for winter! For animal lovers, it’s a dream opportunity to meet these beautiful dogs and mush their own team across flower-filled meadows and back country trails.

Zip lining. Zip through the forest and over creeks and rivers, and see the Colorado scenery like never before! This is an activity your guests will never forget (don’t be surprised if they sneak off for a second go before they leave!)

Spa day. There are many wonderful spas here in Colorado. And rainy summer afternoons are the perfect time to grab a massage with your bridesmaids or mom and mother-in-law!

Of course, there are so many more activities to enjoy, depending on where you are based. For example, Colorado has a vibrant food and cultural scene, and plenty of historical sights to enjoy. Visit a real gold mine, book a bourbon distillery visit, try geocaching, or take in a haunted tour. Or simply enjoy the summer scenery from an outdoor table at one of our local bars and restaurants, to make the most of the summer air.

Whatever you plan for your guests, it’s sure to be the trip of a lifetime!
